Quirky, outspoken and at times infuriating, super coach Kevin Sheedy occupies a unique position in not just Australian rules, but Australian sport in general. Master strategist, author, world- wide recognized Ambassador of the game and self confessed Martian hater, Kevin is one of the most innovative and interesting people on the speaking circuit today and will have your guests inspired, motivated and maybe just a touch confused…what ever the occasion!
With an unsurpassed record of involvement in a 1000 games and eight premierships, Kevin Sheedy, one of the AFL’s most enduring figures, with over 45 years of involvement with Australian Rules Football.
After playing 251 games including three winning grand finals for VFL club Richmond, Kevin was appointed Senior Coach at the Essendon Football Club in 1981. During his time with Essendon he coached a record 635 games during 27 years of continuous coaching. Of these four were successfully contested day Grand Finals and six night Grand Finals. “All Australian” coach in 1984, 1985, 1993 and 2000 and State of Origin coach in 1984 and 1985, he was also the successful coach of the International Rules Team in 2005 and 2006, winning three of the four Tests played during his tenure.
The inaugural coach of Greater Western Sydney in 2012, Sheedy coached two seasons at the Giants, returning to Essendon in an Ambassador roll in 2014 where he remains today.
As well as on field success, Kevin’s incredible enthusiasm, presence and ability to think outside the box also helped develop the Essendon Football Club to become the powerhouse club it is today. His mentoring skills has lead to many of the players under his tutelage becoming well respected and successful individuals both on and off the field. He received the Advance Australia Award in 1993, was admitted as a Member of the Order of Australia in recognition of his service to sport in 1998 and named the community Australia Sports Commission Coach of the Year for 2000. In 2009, Kevin was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Australian Catholic University for his services to football and particularly the way he has encouraged Aboriginal footballers into the sport.
